Planning Calendars, Budgets and Curriculum Orders

This is the time of year to start planning ahead for 2012. Check with your bishopric or branch presidency as to a deadline for these things to be turned in to them.

Calendar -

Things that will need to go on the unit calendar-

Activity Days for Girls - dates for 2x per month

• including at least 2 times for sharing what they've learned and recognition

Cub Scouts, - including weekly meetings, and pack meetings

• blue and gold dinner, pinewood derby...

11 Yr Old Scouts – includes weekly meetings, activities and campouts

• remember scouting and activity Days for girls are year round

Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation – once during the 4^th quarter

Priesthood Preview – see handbook 11.5.5 – to be held yearly for boys 11 years of age and their parents

Budget-

You might want to consider the following steps in submitting your 2012 budget request to your bishopric or branch presidency.

• Ask your unit clerk what you budgeted and spent last year.
• Ask the leaders in each of the following areas to come up with a proposal for what they think they will need for next year. They should be planning their preliminary calendars and budget with some specifics in mind as they submit that to you.

Plan to keep track of what is spent. This is part of each leader's stewardship – to use the Lord's money wisely. Primary Presidents must sign the budget request form before it goes to the bishopric or branch presidency for payment. If this is followed, then the president [or secretary] can keep track of how much is being spent.

New Testament Stories

The 2011 manual for the children ages 8-11 (Valiant 8, 9, 10, and 11) is Primary 7: New Testament.  One of the resources available to teachers of these classes is New Testament Stories.  This book is available from the church distribution center.  The stories are illustrated and the narrative is written especially for children.  Beginning readers can easily read and understand these scripture stories.  Additionally, this book can be viewed or downloaded at New Testament Stories.  The book is available in pdf, MP3 or several video formats where the pictures in each chapter have been animated and the narrative read.  These approved presentations of the scriptures help children understand the story without adding additional information not found in the scriptures. 

Helping children learn and apply scriptures is one of our goals in Primary.   There is a radio program, “Scripture Stories.” that is broadcast each week on the Mormon Channel that highlights music, discussion and reading from New Testament Stories.  Listening to some of these archived programs can improve you own ability to guide children through the process of making scriptures part of what is happening in their own lives.

We can use this wonderful resource of New Testament Stories, in its many presentation formats, to help children “feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do” (2 Nephi 32:3).

Thoughts about Primary from General Conference - April 2010

President Henry B. Eyring talked about helping children by providing ways to build faith in Jesus Christ and his restored gospel. “Many bishops in the Church are inspired to call the strongest people in the ward to serve individual children in the Primary. They realize that if the children are strengthened with faith and testimony, they will be less likely to need rescue as teenagers. They realize that a strong spiritual foundation can make the difference for a lifetime.” He concluded, “I promise each of you, as you follow inspired direction in this, the true Church of Jesus Christ, that our youth and we who help and love them can be delivered safely to our home with Heavenly Father and the Savior to live in families and in joy forever”.

The primary has wonderful resources available for teaching the children. The 2010 Sharing Time Outline and the nursery manual, Behold Your Little Ones, are great examples. Primary materials, correlated and approved by the priesthood, will be of great worth to this generation of children. President Boyd K. Packer spoke of the importance of this priesthood direction:

• "Years ago we began correlation under the direction of President Harold B. Lee. At that time President Thomas S. Monson said: “Today, we are encamped against the greatest array of sin, vice, and evil ever assembled before our eyes. . . . The battle plan whereby we fight to save the souls of men is not our own. It [came through] the inspiration and revelation of the Lord.”

The ideas from others may be well-meaning but lack priesthood approval. What great assurance we have that the "battle plan" we are using is the one prepared by the Lords' priesthood servants.

Sister Cheryl C. Lant, recently released Primary General President, reminded us, “It is our sacred responsibility as parents and leaders of this rising generation of children to bring them to the Savior so that they might see His face and the face of our Father in Heaven as well. As we do so, we also bring ourselves. . . Elder M. Russell Ballard has said, “Clearly, those of us who have been entrusted with precious children have been given a sacred, noble stewardship, for we are the ones God has appointed to encircle today’s children with love and the fire of faith and an understanding of who they are” (“Behold Your Little Ones,” Tambuli, Oct. 1994, 40; “Great Shall Be the Peace of Thy Children,” Ensign, Apr. 1994, 60).

This month's Friend is packed with ideas for leaders and teachers in the Primary.
Here are a few:

1. The "Sharing Time" page (p 40-41) no longer provides teaching ideas for Sunday Sharing Time. See the following note from FAQ on lds.org/pa:

   Starting with the January 2010 issue of the Friend magazine, the sharing time ideas for leaders will no longer be included. These ideas are incorporated into the outline for sharing time.    One possible way of using the "Sharing Time" pages this year could be in Activity Days for Girls and Scouting. Completing the Scripture Journal suggested for this year could be a great goal for Faith in God. This month focuses specifically on the first Article of Faith and its meaning.
   
   
2. "I Know that My Savior Loves Me", p 24-25 – Includes a teaching suggestion for Primary music leaders.
   
   
   
3. Primary is a time to prepare children to receive their first temple recommend. They will have the opportunity to do baptisms for the dead at age twelve. "A Year on Temple Square: The Salt Lake Temple", p 6-7 gives information about temples and provides a link to an online video that will show what it is like to go inside the temple to be baptized for the dead.
   
   
   
4. 2010 Outline for Sharing Time

• The music for the Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation and use during 2010 sharing times is available online. 
• A helpful introduction on How to Use and Teach from the newly formatted 2010 outline is also available.

• What do we do for sharing time for the fifth Sunday of the month?
  "When there is a fifth Sunday, use this time to review previous lessons" (2010 Outline for Sharing Time, inside front cover).
  
• Do we still do class presentations during sharing time?
  Starting January 2010, there will be no class presentations. However, "occasionally you [the Primary presidency] may invite teachers and their classes to help you with parts of the gospel instruction" (2010 Outline for Sharing Time, inside front cover).
  
• How should we divide up sharing time and singing time?
  Fifteen minutes should be for gospel teaching and twenty minutes for teaching music (see 2010 Outline for Sharing Time, 1).
  
• Can we use pictures in the sacrament meeting presentation?
  "Visuals, costumes, and media presentations are not appropriate for sacrament meeting" (2010 Outline for Sharing Time, 1).
  
• Have class names been changed?
  The Primary class names have been aligned with the ages of the children on January 1. For example, the CTR 4 class is for children age four on January 1, the Valiant 8 class is for children age eight on January 1, and so forth (see 2010 Outline for Sharing Time, 1).
  
• Will sharing time ideas still be in the Friend magazine?
  Starting with the January 2010 issue of the Friend magazine, the sharing time ideas for leaders will no longer be included. These ideas are incorporated into the outline for sharing time. The sharing time for children will still be in the magazine.

The Primary Handbook states, "Primary Leaders and teachers should use Church-produced materials that are appropriate for children. These items are listed in the annual Church Materials Catalog" (p 239).

Magnify Your Calling in Primary by "Discovering"the Approved Resources Available to You!

"Discover" the promises of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in the scriptures. Encourage the children to bring their scriptures to Primary, and then provide many opportunities for them to use them as you teach gospel principles.

"Discover" what's in the Friend magazine every month! The Friend contains articles, features, the sharing time page, sharing time ideas, things to make and do, music, and many more age-appropriate activities to help children apply gospel principles in their lives. Find the Friend on the Church Web site or in your mailbox!

"Discover" gospel truths in the Outline for Sharing Time and the Children's Sacrament Meeting Presentation. The monthly theme and scripture, weekly gospel principles, music, and sharing time ideas can assist you in planning meaningful learning activities for children. It is also the outline for your sacrament meeting presentation.

"Discover" the faith-promoting stories and age-appropriate activities found in the Primary manuals that can help children apply gospel principles in their lives. Primary manuals provide an excellent resource for teachers and leaders. The section at the beginning of each manual entitled "Helps for the Teacher" will help you know how to engage children in learning. Discover sharing time ideas in the other manuals and picture packets.

"Discover" the many ways you can use the Faith in God guidebooks (36812, 36813) when teaching gospel principles. The activity sections in the Faith in God guidebooks are "Learning and Living the Gospel," "Serving Others," "Developing Talents," "Preparing for Young Women," and "Preparing for the Priesthood." What part of the guidebooks would you use to teach baptism or to teach prayer? Discover other ideas that are available.

"Discover" the many wonderful visual-aids there are from the Gospel Art Picture Kit (34730) to teach gospel principles and scripture stories to children.

"Discover" how you can spark a child's interest and teach a gospel principle in your sharing time by showing a clip from a Church video or DVD. Videos are a wonderful resource in teaching gospel principles to children in sharing time. You should be able to locate these videos or DVDs in your ward or branch libraries.

"Discover" how a mouse can take you to the wonderful world of Primary. The Church Web site is a wonderful resource and is only a click away. Go to lds.org, click "Serving in the Church," and click "Primary." WOW! It's the wonderful world of Primary, right there on the screen in front of you. What a discovery!

"Discover" exciting Church-produced scripture stories for children that will help children feel the Spirit and promote testimony growth. Scripture stories are an excellent resource that teachers can apply to every lesson. Children will grow spiritually as they bring exciting personages to life from Old Testament Stories (31118), New Testament Stories (31119), Book of Mormon Stories (35666), and Doctrine and Covenant Stories (31122)

"Discover" how the Family Home Evening Resource Book (31106) provides ideas and lessons for teachers and parents to help the children understand and apply gospel principles. Discover fun ideas for gospel-centered activities of different age groups. Also, discover the blessings in your life and the lives of those you teach for being obedient to the counsel from the leaders of the Church by using Church-produced resources.

"Discover" the joy of singing as you use the Children’s Songbook (35395) to teach children gospel principles through song. "Sing unto the Lord, all the earth" (1 Chronicles 16:23). Occasionally, take time to read the section "Using the Songbook," found on page 300 of the Children’s Songbook. This section can provide great help for music leaders, as well as parents, in teaching children the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. Remember that our sacred hymns can also be used in Primary to teach gospel principles.
